We grew Brassica Rapa until the end of school!

March activities

February left us with leafless trees and cool colors, so we made a mural of patterns on tree trunks.

So much going on in March...
In celebration for Dr. Seuss' birthday we made a truffula tree forest. The Lorax is my favorite Dr. Seuss story so we had to make the truffula trees. I found it on pinterest here http://pinterest.com/pin/145381894193129414/

I made the bulletin board with fabric flowers for spring!
I went to my local home depot and asked if they would donate the black tubes, flower wiring (to connect the tissue paper flower to the tubes) and yellow tape and they did!

Still keeping up with reading I have a phonics review board. I have found that after the break and they are done with letter sounds and short vowel review things get hard FAST! So I love this phonics review board, it reminds me of what they learned!

I went to Red Butte Garden's teacher grow lab workshop and received a free grow lab! I had a volunteer come out from Red Butte Garden to start our kids with Brassica Rapa seeds.

Fun with vocab words

I try to do several fun things to learn words. We have an indoor snowball fight...

We salad our words, using the big spoons to find a word in (paper) salad...

We fish for our word. This has a magnet at the end of a fish pole, the vocab word has a magnet on it so it gets picked up...

A grant helped us get magnet words that they make words on my file cabinet...

Lastly is wiki stix that can make words

December

We created fun activities for December.
One of my favorite is a retro christmas tree. It is created with 5 craft sticks horizontal and one vertical, glue them together. I got scrapbook paper from Michael's and pre-cut strips. They picked out the 5 strips they wanted and glued them on. Lastly they got a gem (also from Michael's) and glued it on top with a string so it can hang on the Cristmas tree!

Tea Blends-a language arts unit

In this Language Arts Unit students will blend bl, br, sc, sk, sm, sn, sp, st, sw, sl, tr, tw, wr,  cl, cr, dr, fl, fr, pl, pr, gl, gr
They will put the tea pot with the tea cup and blend to say the word. This is perfect for first graders. There are cards for all the words that you can create a blend word wall or do a go fish game. Lastly there are cards that have the blend separate from the rest of the word.

Also I mad a monster math unit in which a student rolls the dice and puts the number in the first box, the monster's head. Partner rolls their dice and places in the second box, monster's body. Then they add it together and place the number in the legs.
